I loved reading this! Oh, and also... I'm like your mum, haha I take plenty of supplements. I buy them in the Bio Shop for extra safety, as I'm sometimes suspicious about what goes into these supplements. I eat healthy, too. But in my mind, these supplements give me that extra push
That's such a good point about bio supplements. It's wild that we have to watch our steps when it comes to anything we ingest. I feel like a martian at the supermarket reading the back of any product like it was a book...
Otis slightly unrelated, I guess, but I was thinking the other day about how I've been conditioned since childhood to put certain things in the fridge and leave other things outside of it. You said something about how grapefruits shouldn't be in the fridge, or that this was the first time you saw grapefruits in a fridge? I remember my Mom putting grapefruits in the fridge as a kid. But at the grocery story they are in a non-refrigerated section. I really don't know. My wife sometimes puts cereal in the fridge. I have no idea what got into her. LOL. Maybe I'm wrong on that one, too, though. Thanks for liking my Note yesterday. Will subscribe. I really love learning more about food and cooking.
Hey Thomas, I appreciate the comment. I think it doesn't matter what goes where except for the obvious perishables. The childhood fridge conditioning is real, I'm with you on that one.
Definitely the first time I saw grapefruits in the fridge. I still don't know how I feel about it because I never have that many to start with.
Citrus are fine out of the fridge for a little over a week then they tend to slowly give out. That's a good time to throw them in the fridge to make them last another week or so. I like to keep my citrus in their own bowl and separate them from any other fruits because the citrus give off some sort of gas that makes the other fruit perish quicker. Same with garlic and onions. Weird nerdy food fact I read somewhere.
The cereal in the fridge is another first for me. That is an interesting one! I am curious to know more about it and why only sometimes?
Otis your guess is as good as mine. I'm going to have to ask about the cereal, haha. Thank you for the note about the citrus. I heard you can use a super ripe banana to make green bananas ripen faster by placing them in a bag together. Is that true?
Please keep me updated about the cereal 🥣 The bananas is an interesting one, didn’t know it and will test it out. It sounds similar to the avocado trick of putting a banana in a brown paper bag with avocados and they’ll get ripe quicker. 👨🔬
Are your parents Italian by any chance? Though their cuisine is simple, the amount of pills and potions Italians like to take is baffling to me (a Dutch person).
I'm more like you I think, I just swap out some carbs for veggies when I'm a bit sniffy and call it a day. That said, the scientist in me gets very excited by a fridge full of tiny brown bottles! And also, I'm craving kimchi now.
Hey Jane! My parents aren’t Italian, my mother is German and my father is French. I’m not surprised about Italian’s and their interest in those things. They have a history with plague doctors during the renaissance, could be a long line of suggestive medecines.
And, oh that’s not fair I just had dinner, you hit me with kimchi just like that? I love kimchi and now my mouth is salivating for it.
I think these little brown bottles will clog up everyone’s kitchen at one point. It must be the inevitable curiosity on how to improve health. 🤷♂️
